Goodbye, Hexipuff + A Contest!

Sock Yarn Mini-Skeins: Mysteries & Mayhem
Two blog posts in one day?! WHAT??  This news flash just couldn't wait til tomorrow: I've marked down the last 5 sets of miniskeins in my shop - each one is ten bucks a pop, get 'em while they're hot!

I'm not sure if I'll be doing more miniskein sets in the new year - while it was fun and thoroughly addictive - almost addictive as hexipuffing is! -  I think 2012 is going to be incredibly busy in other aspects of my life, and I don't want to let my faithful hexipuffers down with spotty customer service.

At any rate:  once these sets are gone, they're GONE.  I'll be using the same shop address to destash extraneous craft supplies for the remainder of this year - yarn, buttons, beads, etc.  So please bookmark it and check back, or follow me on Twitter - the best way to get shop updates & tomfoolery.

On a slightly unrelated note, I've been orchestrating so many contests and giveaways for my clients this month that I want in on the fun!  Leave a comment on this post telling me the first project you intend to make for yourself in the new year!  On Friday, I'll randomly select 3 people to win a hard copy of my Bonfire Fingerless Mitts 1 of the 3 selected will also receive a skein of Kitchen Sink Dyeworks Sock Yarn - this amazing hand-dyer recently closed up shop in pursuit of other knitterly arenas.  If you missed out on her huge sale last month, now is your chance to snap up a skein of lovely, lovely yarn, all for the price of a comment!

  1. Oh, I've still yet to find the right yarn for my Mr. Nubbins. I've got yarn from Sanguine Gryphon that's waiting to be made into a Practical Procrastination Pullover, a 198 yd shawl, and something else.

I also need to find yarn for a Lovelace cardigan.

  2. I am planning to make myself a Gnarled Oak Cardigan from Coastal Knits. Not sure it's the first thing I'll make for myself next year, but it's definitely in the plans. I bought yarn for it from my friend who's my LYSO and dyed the yarn.

I also have a couple of other patterns and yarn floating around though, so who knows what will hit the needles first. I suppose I should finish my husband's sweater first!

  3. My first project in the new year will be to spin up four different kinds of plant-based fibers (I bought as a sampler pack at SAFONA last month), then crochet them into a shawl. I spin on my drop spindle in public, and people always ask about it, so I figure, why not be educational as well as entertaining? ;-)

  18. I plan on making myself a make-it-up-as-I-go-along fine gauge shawl, BUT as I got a big gift certificate for my LYS recently, I'm thinking I just might make a fair isle sweater. Unfortunately, I keep thinking about the unfinished projects in a certain closet. . .maybe it's time to finish them? On the other hand, I could rip 'em all out. . .

Overdyeing A Finished Knit

Even after just a few years of knitting or crocheting, you're bound to have some finished projects lying around that never get worn or used. After 10+ years of crafting, I have more than just "some" or "a few"....and with my ongoing quest to declutter my house this year, I've become obsessed with going through these forlorn projects and making some Big Decisions. Sometimes, they are perfectly fine and just need a new and loving home. Other projects may have not turned out quite right: there might have been some mistakes in the knitting that I thought I could live with, or the yarn was gorgeous but not well-matched to the pattern, or my  taste has drastically changed since I finished making the project...in any case, why on earth did I keep knitting?! Who knows, but I don't feel good about gifting anything that falls into this category to someone else. These projects have been relegated to the "frog pile" (or should I say, frog pond?), to b

Easy DIY: Beaded Vintage Snowflake Ornament Kits from Solid Oak Inc.

I was really excited to step outside of my comfort zone and try something new as part of my "Christmas in July" theme this month. The kind folks at Solid Oak Inc offered me a chance to review one of their Nostalgic Christmas beaded crystal ornament kits I couldn't resist. My tree is already full of ornaments I've inherited or been gifted from other family members and friends,  so these pretty crystal beaded ornaments will fit right in I think! I was super impressed with  this compact little kit , which includes everything needed to create three gorgeous vintage-style ornaments - just add a pair of round nose pliers (I found mine on Amazon for less than ten bucks).  The instructions had some fabulous tips for newbies like me; for example, it recommended sorting the beads and laying them out in order on a towel or beading mat to prevent them from rolling away. That may seem obvious, but I was totally ready to start beading on my kitchen table without a

What If I Didn't Add Heels?

Last weekend, I finished the first sock with my Waterlilies yarn , and just for yuks, I tried it on even though it was basically just a tube sock. Much to my surprise, it fit really well, even without a heel. Who knew? So, that got me thinking: what if I just didn't add the heels?  I never thought a tube sock would actually fit nicely, but I genuinely like the fit, so...why spend time to add the heels? As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.... Let's say I decide not to add heels once the second sock is done - there will still be placeholder yarn for the afterthought heels, as you can see above, so should I leave it in and just weave in the ends? Or should I remove it, put the live stitches back on needles and at least graft them together using more of the Waterlilies yarn? I plan on mulling all of this over as I knit the second sock, and I'd love to hear your opinions of what you think would look best (or if you think this whole "n
